Education Secretary Leonor Briones inaugurated the opening ceremony of Oplan Balik Eskwela in Marawi City, in commemoration of the first anniversary of the Marawi siege.
In her speech, Secretary Briones encouraged learners to continue pursuing their dreams despite the bitter experience of the ISIS-Maute led attack.
This as she assured them that the education department will continue to look work hard in rebuilding the schools in the war-torn Islamic city.
Briones, together with Undersecretary Alain Pascua, Assistant Secretary G.H. Ambat, and members of the DepEd management committee, visited the schools that were heavily damaged by the siege.
This year’s ‘Balik Eskwela’ in Marawi City is considered as ‘historic’ since this is the first time that the classes opened in time for the Muslim’s Holy Month of Ramadan.
It can be remembered that on May 23, 2017 Maute members attacked the Islamic city, and conflict between the government troops and ISIS backed Maute group broke out, destroying properties, killing lives, injuring hundreds, and displacing thousands of Marawi residents.
