HOUSE Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, cleared the toxic and controversial ABS- CBN franchise issue, says the Lower House is impartial within the matter saying that they are not pro nor anti of the renewal.
Cayetano also clarified that they are left with no options but to launch the committee hearings for the ABS- CBN franchise after lawmakers have disagreed with the initiative of granting the network a provisional franchise good for five months.
“Well, one thing I will insist and I will insisting on is a fair hearing ‘di ba? Yan ang mininum ko. Kaya noong hindi nagkasundo yung mga kongresista kung 6 months muna tapos hearing or hearing muna bago 25 years ang ini-insist ko okay if you don’t want to give the 5 months o 6 months doon sa mga ayaw, we have no choice but to do hearing,” said Cayetano.
The House of Representatives is set to tackle bills granting ABS-CBN a 25-year franchise on Tuesday next week, May 26 at 1 PM.
Cayetano noted that the Legislative Franchises Committee might be joined by the Committee on Good Government as officials from the National Telecommunications Commission are set to attend in the hearing.
It was NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordova’s under oath statement in the last March 10 hearing to give ABS- CBN a provisional franchise that sparked anger from the lawmakers.
That so-called assurance has been denied as the NTC issued a cease and desist order following the expiration of the ABS- CBN’s franchise last May 4th.
While the ball is rolling in the committee, other members of the House will focus on other important legislation.
“So ‘yun yung pakiusap ko sa ating mga kababayan, tayo lahat ngayon ay parang mga judge. Makinig tayo sa pro at anti and give them a fair chance. On the same hand, pag-usapan natin yung ayuda, yung stimulus, yung new normal, yung infrastructure development na kailangan natin. Kailangan nating ipagsabay yan,” he said.
Cayetano to his bashers: Study the law before commenting
Meanwhile, Cayetano advised his bashers on social media before reacting.
He made the statement after lawmakers dropped recently the deliberations for the ABS- CBN provisional franchise bill.
“Yung lahat ng nagsabi sa Facebook na iligal ang ginagawa namin mag-aral muna kayo ng batas. Ang nakalagay sa constitution not more than 50 years. So one day, five month o 6 months pwede namin ibigay. But it’s not the question of can we? It’s the question of should we? At doon nga hindi magkasundo ang mga political parties at yung different lawyer,” Cayetano said.
