Malacañang lauds the milestone meeting between US President Donald Trump and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) leader Kim Jong Un held in Singapore.
The landmark summit of the two world leaders, was aimed at stopping Pyongyang’s nuclear development and give up its nuclear and ballistic weapons.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that the historical meeting between Trump and Kim emphasized the importance of diplomacy and peaceful discourse that promises peace, security in the region and the rest of the world.
According to Roque, “We welcome the landmark summit between US President Donald Trump and DPRK leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.
This development, which has underscored in the strongest terms the value of diplomacy and peaceful dialogue, augurs well for the peace, security and stability in the region and the world.”
Roque also said that the summit was indeed historical and is also the beginning of the process.
With this, the presidential spokesperson has expressed the Philippines’ willingness to extend its help in bringing the summit’s aims into realization.
Roque said that, “History has indeed been written. At the same time, this is but the beginning of a process. The Philippines is ready and willing to lend its support toward bringing it to fruition.”
Meanwhile, it can be remembered that back in 2017 President Rodrigo Duterte called North Korea’s supreme leader a ‘maniac’ who could destroy Asia.
However last April, Duterte praised Kim following his efforts to end the rift with South Korea and the decommissioning of nuclear weapons. And for Duterte, North’s Kim is now his idol.
